I Don't Know Linux

April 10, 2019

I’ve recently come across a tutorial that goes over Linux basics, and it turns out I don’t really know it. The common commands I know are cd and pwd. To go to the home directory, I use the tilde expansion and that’s about it on how I use it. I’ve also used the double dot, but I didn’t know they’re called inodes and that they can be concatenated. For example:

$ pwd
/home/jsmith/grocery_store/foods/
$ cd ../ ../
$pwd
/home/jsmith/
$

Another thing I didn’t know until now is the use of dash:

$ pwd
/home/jsmith/grocery_store/foods/
$ cd ../ ../
$ pwd
/home/jsmith/
$ cd -
$ pwd
/home/jsmith/grocery_store/foods/
